Entry 10

Here comes the end of this semester. My mind flashes back to every memory I had with this lesson, Introduction to Language Learning. I have always wondered what it would be like when it ends. I have imagined about knowing Malay so well that I would be able to talk to Malaysian using some simple dialogues. Of course, at this point of the semester, this goal is certainly achieved as one of my group's learning purpose is to learn the daily dialogues. Yet, I have learned so much more than merely about Malay. I have also learned how to be a teacher. The importance of a teacher and the teaching method were clearly shown to me in the process of I trying to be one and coming up with one respectively. Even though being a teacher is not easy, I still enjoyed teaching my classmates Malay. The process was fun. It felt really nice to pass on what I have learned and help my students. Entry 9

  Today, my groupmates and I held a review activity with my fellow classmates about the Malaysian words they learned last week. We started our lesson by reviewing those vocabularies first, including vocabularies for food, hobbies and places. By listening to them pronouncing those words, I can see that all of them were hard-working and attentive students. I truly appreciated that. After the quick review, I showed them a few pictures representing those vocabularies and asked them to point out that food, place or activity by saying its Malaysian name. Gladly, despite having a little bit difficulties recognizing the food, they all did a very good job. Through linking the vocabularies which they have learned to pictures, my groupmates and I hope that this method can help our classmates memorize the words easier. Entry 8

  After learning Malaysian for almost a whole semester, it was my turn to teach my classmates the things, which I have learned, today. I was in charge of leading the Kahoot game and teaching the dialogic part. The Kahoot game was about Malaysian culture. It served as an intro to the teaching. There were questions regarding Malaysian food, Malaysian national flag, etc. All of my classmates were participating in the game enthusiastically. Three of the classmates answered many questions correctly and made into the top three. They were given a bag of snacks as presents. For the dialogic part, there were five dialogues in total for me to teach. The first one was " halo, saya_______。Selamat menemui anda/awak" meaning "hello, I am… . Nice to meet you,".   Last week, my professor invited a girl working at Funday to come to our class and have a sharing. She has not worked in that company for a really long period of time but she has already got a lot of experience to share with us. She talked about her working experience like her interaction with the learners. All of the experience were fun and interesting. By knowing her experience, many questions regarding online teaching have been answered. She used a video of her teaching as a demonstration of the real situation happened during online teaching. I admire how the teacher remained calm and was quick when they have to check the answers of the students. Meanwhile, I can start to understand the necessity of having online teaching. Most of the students are adults. They do not usually have that much time and patience to learn a new language by their own. This week, I have watched a video about a talk given by Jim Kwik. The talk is named "Unleash Your Super Brain to Learn Faster". The speaker mentioned problems nowadays like digital overload in order to emphasize to importance of learning faster. He started the talk with doing a test with the audience and there were some more exercises along the way. These exercises helped the audience to understand his teaching vividly. His teaching involved six main elements, which is called "be fast". B is for "belief". E is for "exercise". F is for "forget". A is for "active". S is for "state" while T is for "teach". Among the whole talk, there were three main points impressing me the most.    The first one was all learning being state-dependent. Information combining with emotion can become long-term memory so having passion in what you are learning is crucial. You had to show up and play full out at the same time....

Entry 5

Last week, I was offered an opportunity to listen to a talk. The speaker of that talk was Terry Hsieh and the topic was "Language Acquisition and East Asia Culture Sphere". During the talk, Mr. Hsieh introduced several events and their represented ideas. For examples, polyglot conference, polyglot cafe and flying to other countries for a few days or more for the purpose of polyglot-immersion. Most of the events were new to me and I was really interested in trying some of them.   Through the events, learners can understand that learning language was a lifelong pursuit which was also mentioned by Mr. Hsieh. People cannot just take an examination regarding the language and declare themselves as knowing every details of the language. This was different from what I had known since elementary school. Entry 4

     I have learned a few verbs in Malay this week, including “duduk” meaning “sit down”, “jual” meaning “sell”, “beli” meaning “buy”, “tolak” as “push” and “tarik” as “pull”. Since I was mostly learning nouns regarding food in the last week, I have especially looked up the verb for “eat” in Malay this week. It has turned out to be “makan”. Apart from that, I have learned to ask others about whether he or she wants to eat anything in Malay, which is “kamu makan apa?”. I feel more and more confident in learning Malay now because I can find different bits of help. It enables me to learn faster. Here is an interesting fact. Whenever I see Malaysian food or Malaysian nowadays, I think of the vocabularies or greetings sentences I have learned. It feels so good that the things I have learned can be connected and related to my daily life.
